What on Earth?
I can't count how many times I get asked, "What's a good sounding affordable SS amp I can use with my Peach or Merlin or BlueBerry?" I have a few favorites I recommend, but usually they are in the used category, because good sounding SS amps new really do cost a lot of money. A lot of the affordable amps have too low of an input impedance for the Merlin or other vintage tubed preamps. What the world needs is a great sounding $1,000 SS amp, and I've got it right here for only $795! - "The Duke."
We've taken a brand new Crown D45 and transformed it into a killer little amplifier for not a lot of money. The JuicyMusic Duke has had it's power supply ripped out and replaced with a 2.5X larger, and far more robust, supply that really extends the low end authority. The 4 electrolytic capacitors in the signal path have been replaced with the legendary and state of the art "Black Gate" non-polars. The change this has made in the midrange is remarkable! Still not satisfied though, we went for the 'guts' and pulled the 4 OpAmps out and replaced them with much higher speed and lower noise units. WOW! What a difference this wrought in the attack and dynamics of this amp. The much faster speed brings new life and vitality to the treble ranges too. And finally, we changed the input impedance to be 47k ohms on the unbalanced inputs and reduced the gain to a normal 2.25V for full output. This makes The Duke an easy load to drive for ANY JMA preamplifier, or any tube preamplifier including vintage units.
The Duke is a beautiful sounding entry level SS amp for use with the higher efficiency speakers. I've been using it on single-driver speakers and it has a very musical balance that is easy to listen to. It would also make a superb tweeter or horn amplifier in a bi-amped system.
